What is merino wool and what are its benefits?

The Merino is a breed of sheep that has a dense and curly fleece producing an abundant, comfortable and resistant wool. Three times thinner than traditional wool, it does not scratch. The most sensitive skins will appreciate its softness and delicateness. It is very warm and easily regulates air flows and temperature which makes it perfect for blankets. And it is so nice to look at that it is a beautiful addition to your home decor!

Why is merino wool expensive?

First of all, merino wool is a very noble product. It is naturally produced and remains relatively rare. What’s more, Merino wool grows slowly and is much finer than most other fibers, it is even much finer than a human hair! Its incredible fineness is what makes it so beautiful and soft and makes sure it doesn’t itch. However, because of its fine fibers, it takes twice as much wool to make a top of a certain weight compared to one of more standard wool of the same weight. Plus, it lets air flow and manages moisture better than any other fiber. All these exceptional features make it a little more expensive to acquire the wool, but for a result that won’t let you down!

Where do you source your wool?

At Comfywool, we work exclusively with european breeders. This choice if motivated by two reasons: First, our producers offer wool of great quality thanks to their long experience and know-how. Second, being a european company, sourcing our wool in Europe rather than on another continent allows us to reduce the environmental impact of our production process.

How should I wash my merino wool creation?

Merino wool is a noble and fragile material. If you decide to wash it, we highly recommend dry cleaning by a professional. Should you choose to do it yourself, you could also very carefully wash it by hand with a soap designed for wool. Lay your blanket flat when letting it dry to avoid deformation. Never put your merino wool items in your washing machine as it will undergo felting and won’t come out as beautiful as it was!

How to take care of my merino wool?

Some simple steps will help you keep your merino wool looking as new. To learn all about how to take care of your items made out of merino wool, check out our article on this topic on the blog.

Is it safe for the animal?

Yes, it is safe for the animals the wool come from, namely merino sheep. We have at heart to make sure our yarn is obtained in respect of the sheep and chose our suppliers accordingly. By the way, did you know each merino sheep produces the equivalent of 5500 miles of fiber per year? In a way, by buying their wool, you’re doing them a favor!
